Born 1978 in Paddington, Sydney, Australia, Mark Hanham studied at National Art School then completed a Master’s Degree in Art at the College of Fine Art. Mark Hanham was attracted to art at an early age and had an exceptional talent in capturing perspective, even when four years old - he has been drawing continually ever since. In 2011 at the age of 33, he took the almost unprecedented step of opening his own gallery in Surry Hills Sydney, exhibiting only MARK HANHAM ART.

He has painted every day since he was fourteen years of age and is an extraordinarily successful artist! Mark is known for his large scale, brash works and takes the viewer on a journey of discovery into his own world. A contemporary realistic action painter, he is influenced and inspired by American modernist painter Jackson Pollock’s dripping of paint, Picasso’s linear soft forms and his love for travel. One sees the isolation of cities also in Hanham’s paintings, Mark often visually narrates daily life allowing the collector to be immediately be transported to those international grand cities when connecting with his work.
Mark is especially known for his large scale streetscapes and iconic well known city overviews. In 2011 at the age of 33, he took the almost unprecedented step of opening his own gallery in Sydney’s busy Crown Street Surry Hills. Mark has travelled throughout Europe, gaining momentum for a Tuscan series and staging a solo show at Singapore.
Mark’s celebrity clients include Russell Crowe, Lionel Richie, Todd Jacques, Mark Taylor CEOTaylor Constructions, Atlassian Corp PLC’s Sydney Scott Farquhar and Kim Jackson, Frank Costigan CEO at QBE Insurance, Tanya March SVP of EnVizi North America, the Australian cricket player & former captain Shane Watson & his wife TV celebrity Lee Watson, wine maker Lisa McGuigan Wines and many corporate and large private collections Australia and worldwide.
His bold expressive landscapes of iconic urban centres – PARIS, SYDNEY, NEW YORK, LONDON, VENICE, and TOKYO are unique. Hanham’s point of difference is scale and energy but all counterpoised with romanticism, hope and a commentary on the human condition. Mark Hanham is certainly one of the collected investment artists of Australia and his move to the world stage complete.
“I did not simply choose to be an artist. It probably started when I was a child growing up in Sydney inner city surrounded by galleries and people who are truly passionate about design and the Arts. My use of abstract line and form brings quite a range of problems to be solved. A series of imaginative developments involving colour, texture and more lines are added to my works until I am satisfied that I have captured a moment in time. I have tried to take a more literal approach to abstract expressionism since completing my Masters Degree in 2004 through a more figurative way of working, so that you can see what the image is without seeing it all. This allows the viewer to imbue their individual sense into the work. It invites them to get involved. A lot of my work is about street and cityscapes, it’s about the chaos of a city, the rush, the alienation that occurs in urban living.” Mark Hanham 2018.
